Luton van internal dimensions vary by make and body builder, so treat these as a guide. The load floor is higher than a panel van’s, and the box is square, with no wheel arches inside, which is why Lutons suit furniture and stacked boxes.

Luton Van Capacity: Pallets, Boxes and Furniture

Luton van capacity is the reason to choose one: a square box with no wheel arches in the way. In our Luton vans that means:

  • Pallets: up to 6 UK pallets or 8 Euro pallets, within the weight limit. See pallet delivery.
  • Furniture: wardrobes, sofas, beds and white goods, typically the contents of a small flat. See furniture courier.
  • Boxes and stock: bulk boxes, exhibition stands and retail stock stacked floor to ceiling.

The Luton peak above the driver takes light, flat items such as mattresses and boxed bedding.

Luton Van With Tail Lift

Our Luton vans have a tail lift: a powered platform across the back of the box that lifts goods from the ground to the load floor. It means pallets, white goods, safes and heavy furniture can be loaded and unloaded without a forklift or loading bay, which suits deliveries to shops, homes and sites with no dock.

A tail lift has its own weight limit, separate from the van’s payload, so tell us the weight of the heaviest single item when you book. See pallet delivery and furniture courier.

Luton Van Weight Limit

The Luton van weight limit is set by its 3.5-tonne maximum authorised mass: the van, the box body, the driver, the fuel and the load together. Because the box body is heavy, the Luton van payload is usually only about 800 to 1,200 kg, and ours carry about 1,000 kg.

So how much can a Luton van carry? Plenty of volume but limited weight: a full load of furniture is fine, while dense loads such as stone, paper or machinery can reach the limit long before the box is full. For heavy loads, a long wheelbase van (about 1,100 to 1,300 kg in ours) or a lorry may suit better.

Booking a Luton Van Courier

A Luton van courier from First Choice Transportation is £60 for the first 10 miles, then £1.80 a mile, plus VAT, with the driver included. We collect within 30 to 45 minutes across London and the Home Counties and within the hour elsewhere, 24 hours a day. The driver helps load at both ends; for heavy items, someone at each end takes the other side.

Send photos of the load when you get a courier quote and we confirm the van. All sizes: van sizes and our fleet.

Luton Van Dimensions FAQ

A typical 3.5-tonne Luton van is about 3.0 to 3.3 metres tall overall, because the box body extends over the driver’s compartment (the Luton peak). Check the height before using car parks, low bridges or underground loading bays. Inside, the load area is usually about 2.0 to 2.2 metres high.

By weight, a 3.5-tonne Luton van carries much less than its size suggests, because the box body is heavy. Ours carry about 1,000 kg. By space, a typical Luton holds 16 to 20 cubic metres, up to 6 UK or 8 Euro pallets, or the furniture from a small flat.

Usually yes. Most Luton vans are 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass, which a standard category B car licence covers. Anything heavier, such as a 7.5-tonne box lorry, needs a C1 licence. If you book a Luton van courier, you do not need to drive: our driver comes with the van.

In volume, yes: a Luton’s square box holds roughly 16 to 20 cubic metres against about 11 to 17 for a long wheelbase panel van. But a long wheelbase van often carries more weight, and can be better for long items. Our long wheelbase vans carry about 1,100 to 1,300 kg.

£60 for the first 10 miles, then £1.80 a mile, plus VAT, for the whole van. For example, a 50-mile job costs £132 plus VAT. There is no extra charge for the size of the load, the time of day or the weekend. Larger loads go by lorry and are quoted per job.

Almost always. A typical Luton load area is about 4 metres long and over 2 metres wide and high, so a three-seater sofa fits standing or lying flat, with room for other furniture. Very long corner sofas may need to be split into sections. Send us a photo and the measurements and we confirm before booking.
