How to Send a Large Parcel

To send a large parcel, pack it in a strong double-walled box, weigh it, measure all three sides, then check the result against each carrier’s size and weight limits. Within the limits, a parcel network is usually cheapest. Beyond them, or when it must arrive today, book a van courier. First Choice Transportation Ltd explains each step below.

How to Send a Large Parcel, Step by Step

  1. Pack it. Use a box that fits the item with room for 5cm of padding on every side. See how to package a large parcel below.
  2. Weigh it. Weigh the packed parcel, not the item: bathroom scales work if you weigh yourself holding it and subtract your own weight.
  3. Measure it. Measure length, width and height of the packed box, and work out length plus girth if the carrier asks for it.
  4. Choose the service. Compare the figures with the carrier limits table. If it fits, compare prices; if it does not, or it has to arrive today, book a van courier.
  5. Label and book. Print the label, fix it to the largest flat side, and book a collection or drop-off. Keep the receipt as proof of posting.

The same steps apply to any big parcel or bulky box you post, whether it is a single item for a buyer or stock for a customer.

How to Package a Large Parcel

  • Double-walled box. Single-wall cardboard crushes under weight. For anything over about 10kg, use a double-walled (or triple-walled) box.
  • Five centimetres of padding. Wrap the item, then fill the gaps so nothing moves when you shake the box. Movement is what breaks things.
  • Heavy items at the bottom. If there is more than one item, put the heaviest at the base and the lightest on top.
  • Tape every seam. Use strong parcel tape in an H pattern across the top and the bottom, and along every edge.
  • One label, old labels removed. Take off or cover any old labels and barcodes so the parcel is not misrouted.
  • Mark it if it is fragile or heavy. Markings help, but networks sort parcels by machine, so packaging is what protects the contents.

Furniture, mirrors, artwork and machinery often cannot be boxed at all. Those go by van, wrapped rather than boxed: see our large item courier service.

Large Parcel Size and Weight Limits

The main UK networks publish these limits for a single parcel. They change, so check with the carrier before you book.

Carrier serviceMaximum weightMaximum size
Royal Mail (UK parcels)20kg61 x 46 x 46cm
Evri large parcel15kg120cm long
DHL eCommerce UK, extra large25kg120 x 70 x 70cm
Parcelforce Worldwide30kg2.5m long, 4m length and girth combined

Limits as published by each carrier, checked October 2026. Girth is twice the width plus twice the height.

Cheapest Way to Send a Large Parcel

The cheapest way to send a large parcel depends on whether it fits a network’s limits:

  • It fits, and there is no rush: a parcel network is usually cheapest. Compare prices on a booking site, drop it at a parcel shop rather than paying for collection, and pack it as small as you safely can, because price bands go by size as well as weight.
  • Several boxes for one address: compare the total of several network parcels with one van. Once you have more than a few heavy boxes, one van journey can cost less and they all arrive together.
  • It does not fit, or it is fragile or unboxed: a van courier. The price goes by distance, not by size, so a long or awkward item costs the same as a small one.
  • It has to arrive today: a same day courier is the only option. Networks deliver the next working day at the earliest.

Our van prices are on the courier prices page: £40 for the first 10 miles then £1.25 a mile in a car or small van, £60 then £1.80 a mile in a long wheelbase or Luton van, plus VAT.

Sending a Parcel Over 30kg

Thirty kilograms is where most parcel networks stop, because their depots sort parcels by conveyor and their drivers lift them alone. Over that, you have three choices:

  1. Split it. If the contents divide, several boxes under 30kg each can go by network.
  2. Palletise it. Heavy stock that can be strapped to a pallet can go by a pallet network, which needs a forklift or pallet truck at both ends.
  3. Send it by van. One heavy item, such as a machine part, a washing machine or a cabinet, goes by van courier. The driver helps carry it between the door and the van, and someone at the other end helps unload it.

For heavy and awkward items see our large item courier page; for furniture, the furniture courier page.

How to Send a Large Parcel FAQ

For UK parcels, Royal Mail’s published limit is 20kg and 61cm by 46cm by 46cm. Anything longer or heavier needs another service: Parcelforce, which is part of the Royal Mail group, takes up to 30kg and 2.5 metres long, and beyond that you need a courier with a van.

Pack it in a double-walled box, weigh it and measure all three sides. At 20kg it fits most networks’ heavier services, including Royal Mail’s limit if the box is no bigger than 61 by 46 by 46cm. Compare prices on a booking site, print the label and book a collection or drop-off.

Most parcel networks stop at 30kg per item, so split the load into several boxes if you can. If you cannot, because it is one heavy object, book a van courier. The item is loaded by hand, travels on its own and is delivered by the same driver, with no conveyor or depot sorting.

Length is the longest side. Girth is the distance around the parcel at its widest point, measured at right angles to the length: twice the width plus twice the height. Add the length to the girth to get the figure carriers quote, such as Parcelforce’s 4 metre combined limit.

Usually not for a single box within the network’s limits; a parcel service is often cheaper. A dedicated van is better value when the item is too big, too heavy or too fragile for a network, when several boxes must arrive together, or when it has to be delivered the same day.
