How to Arrange a Courier Collection

To arrange a courier collection, have the collection and delivery addresses, a contact at each end, the item’s size and weight, and the time it will be ready. Then book: online with a parcel network for next-day pick-up, or by phone with a same day courier who can collect within the hour. First Choice Transportation Ltd explains each step.

How to Arrange a Courier Collection, Step by Step

  1. Get the item ready. Pack it, or for furniture and large items, make sure it is clear and reachable. See how to send a large parcel for packing.
  2. Weigh and measure it. The courier needs rough dimensions and weight to choose a service or a vehicle.
  3. Choose the type of courier. A parcel network for a box that can arrive in a day or two; a same day collection for anything urgent, large or fragile.
  4. Book the collection with both addresses, contact names and phone numbers, and the time it is ready. Confirm the price before you commit.
  5. Label it with the delivery address and a contact name and phone number, even if the courier prints its own label.
  6. Hand it over and keep the booking confirmation until you have the proof of delivery.

Whether you arrange a courier collection online or by phone, those details are what every courier asks for.

What to Have Ready Before You Book

  • Collection address and postcode, with any access notes: floor, lift, loading bay, parking.
  • Delivery address and postcode, and the recipient’s name and phone number.
  • What it is, with rough length, width, height and weight. A photo helps a van courier choose the right vehicle.
  • When it is ready, and any deadline for delivery.
  • Anything unusual: fragile, very heavy, needs two people, or must be signed for by a named person.

With those to hand, booking a courier takes a few minutes.

Courier Collection From Home

A courier collection from home works the same as from a business, with a few things to check:

  • Be in, or have someone in. The driver needs someone to hand the item over, and a van courier checks it with that person.
  • Parking. Tell the courier if there are parking restrictions, a controlled zone or no space outside, so the driver can plan where to stop.
  • Stairs and lifts. For anything heavy, say which floor it is on and whether there is a lift.
  • Help with heavy items. One driver can carry most items; for very heavy ones, be ready to take one end.

For furniture and appliances see our furniture courier and large item courier pages.

Arranging a Collection From Someone Else

You can arrange a courier to collect a parcel from an address that is not yours: a seller, a supplier, a relative or another office. The courier needs:

  • the collection address and the name and phone number of the person handing it over;
  • what they are handing over, so the driver can check it;
  • when it will be ready.

Tell the person at the collection address that a driver is coming. Most failed collections happen because the sender did not know, or the item was not ready. The delivery can then come to you or go straight to a third address.

How to Book a Courier

There are two ways to book a courier, and they suit different jobs:

  • Online, with a parcel network or comparison site. Enter the size and weight, pick a collection day, pay and print a label. The driver collects on their round, usually the next working day within a time window, and the parcel goes through the network’s depots.
  • By phone or message, with a dedicated courier. Give the details to an operator, get a price and a vehicle, and a driver is sent straight away. It suits urgent, large, fragile or valuable items, and collections that cannot wait for tomorrow.

We work the second way: call 020 8202 2008 or WhatsApp 07507 612919, 24 hours a day. Prices are on our courier prices page.

How to Arrange a Courier Collection FAQ

Yes. The collection address does not have to be yours: give the courier the address, a contact name and a phone number for whoever is handing the item over, and tell that person when to expect the driver. You can have it delivered to yourself or to a third address.

For a parcel network, book by the evening before; most collect on the next working day within a long window. A dedicated same day courier can be booked for now: First Choice Transportation collects within 30 to 45 minutes across London and the Home Counties and within the hour elsewhere.

Someone needs to hand the item over, unless the courier allows a safe-place collection. For a dedicated courier, the driver checks the item with the person handing it over, so arrange for an adult to be there and give the courier that person’s phone number in case of a delay.

Tell the courier as soon as you know. A network driver on a round may have to leave and come back on another day. With a dedicated courier, ring the operators before the driver sets off rather than after they arrive, so the driver is not sent for nothing.

A network driver collects parcels the driver can lift alone, typically up to 30kg. A van courier can take heavier and larger items: our drivers help carry them between the door and the van, and for heavy items someone at each end takes the other side. Mention the weight when you book.

Call 020 8202 2008 or send a WhatsApp, 24 hours a day, with both postcodes, what the item is with rough size and weight, and when it is ready. We confirm the price and vehicle, then a driver collects within the hour. The recipient signs and a photo is texted to you.
